About Rustan

Royal Duty Free was founded in 1993 and was given the license to operate a duty-free shop in Subic Special Economic Zone. Subic Bay Freeport is the former US Naval facility in Subic Bay and is now a self sustaining tourism, industrial, commercial, financial, and investment center. It is located 110 km north of Metro Manila.

The number of tourist arrivals in Subic has significantly grown in the past years. For 2015, the number of arrivals increased by 14% from 6.4M in 2014 to 7.3M in 2015. The summer months are the peak months when schools are closed and a visit to the beach is a break. The growing tourist traffic may be attributed to Subic’s accessibility via SCTEX as well as Subic’s popularity as a holiday haven that offers a wide range of natural man-made attractions.

After 23 years, Royal is still the retails choice in Subic with 2 branches with Freeport Zone area,. It is an everyday destination for basic FMCG products and imported, branded lines. For domestic tourists, Royal is an integral part during a trip to Subic. A trip to Subic will not be complete without dropping by Royal.

Target market is predominantly female, aged 30-50 years, ABC and lives in Olongapo, Zambales, Bataan (local residents). She shops at Royal for her everyday household needs and takes her family with her during weekend shopping. She shops at Royal because of its pleasant employees, good customer service, variety of merchandise, value for price and also because it is a trustworthy company.

Rustan Supercenters, Inc. (RSCI), a member of the Rustan Group of Companies, was founded in 1998 at the height of Asian Economic Crisis.

It was the first Rustan Company to take in outside investors. It was also Rustan Group’s first major  foray into the discount retailing segment through an adapted European style hypermarket.

RSCI pioneered the hypermarket concept in the Philippines through Shopwise.

Armed with the vision of providing Quality for All, the Company sought to make the renowned Rustan’s quality accessible to all, especially the middle and working class. Its mission is to most preferred one-stop shop destination for fulfilling the basic needs of the Filipino family.

November 1998 saw the opening of Shopwise in Alabang, the first hypermarket format in the country. This was RSCI’s response to the changing retail landscape. The increasing value consciousness across various income strata, the emerging middle class and new geographical opportunities created the ideal back drop for a new shopping trend which other retailers pursued and continue to replicate to this day.

The Company has attained much success since its inception. From 40 employees, it now employs more than 4,500 employees. From sales to zero, the Company registered sales of over P178B in fiscal year 2012-2013. from one hypermarket in Filinvest Alabang, RSCI has now grown to over 50 stores covering multiple retail formats, namely, hypermarkets, upscale supermarkets, and neighborhood grocery stores.

November 2006 market yet another milestone for RSCI  when it has acquired the 21 Rustan’s stores and food services operations under an Asset Lease Agreement. With this integration, the Company became a multi-format retailer.

Rustan’s Supermarkets offers full-line supermarkets catering to a more discriminating and sophisticated market.

Aside from basic groceries and a wide range of imported goods, Rustan’s Supermarkets feature a full-service deli, the first-of-its-kind soup, salad, and gourmet sandwiches on the go. Catering the growing health consciousness and time starved needs of working mothers, the Gourmet-to-Go concept has attained much success and acceptance from the market. Similarly, Rustan’s Supermarket offers fresh, hand-made pasta, a pizza bar and restaurant concepts, such as Benny’s within its premises.

APPEAL TO SET-UP EMPLOYEES COOPERATIVE IN 2015

A number of employees appealed to the management to set-up Employees Cooperative for Savings and Loan Purposes to its members. Thus, Rustans Supercenters, Inc. and Royal Duty Free Shops, Inc. Employees Credit Cooperative formed.

RATIONALE:

This Cooperative is to help improve the quality of life of its members and in furtherance thereto shall aim:

  • To attain increased income, savings, investments, productivity, and purchasing power, and promote among themselves equitable of net surplus through maximum utilization of economies of scale, cost-sharing, and risk-sharing;
  • To provide optimum social and economic benefits to its members;
  • To teach members efficient ways of doing things in a cooperative manner;
  • To propagate cooperative practices and new ideas in business and management;
  • To allow the lower income and less privileged groups to increase their ownership in the wealth of the nation;
  • To actively support the government, other cooperatives and people oriented organizations, both local and foreign, in promoting cooperatives as a practical means towards sustainable socio-economic development under a truly just and democratic society;
  • To institutionalize a dynamic savings mobilization and capital build-up schemes to sustain its developmental activities and long-term investments; thereby ensuring optimum economic benefits to the members, their families and the general public
